see all reviewsIn a neighborhood better known for cannoli than cork blocks, SOMA Yoga has carved out a sun-drenched sanctuary on the third floor of a historic Hanover Street building. Here, where the aroma of espresso gives way to gentle incense, instructor Meredith Wadsworth channels the metaphysical musings of Baltimore's beloved Sarah Cook with a distinctly Boston twist. During a recent morning flow, Wadsworth's teaching style evoked Cook's Katonah-inspired wisdom while guiding students through warriors and triangles with architectural precision. Her commentary on "house levels" as metaphors for consciousness and bodily "currency," hallmarks of Katonah yoga philosophy, might sound esoteric to the uninitiated, but somehow makes perfect sense when you're balancing in tree pose three stories above the bustling North End streets. The space itself is a study in mindful design: industrial-chic shelving houses an arsenal of cork blocks and charcoal blankets with the organization of a Zen monastery. Sunlight streams through tall windows, creating natural spotlights on the gleaming hardwood floors, while Buddha and Ganesh maintain silent vigil over practitioners' attempts at pyramid pose. SOMA's early risers can start their practice as dawn breaks (6:00 AM on Tuesdays, for the truly committed), and night owls can flow well into the evening. The studio has thoughtfully included showers for the post-practice dash to office or aperitivo, this is the North End, after all. Wadsworth's extended arm holds and perpetual pep talks might leave you wondering if you've wandered into a philosophy seminar disguised as a workout, but that's precisely SOMA's charm. As their entrance sign proclaims "this is the way in," and indeed, whether you're seeking physical challenge or Katonah enlightenment, you'll find your path here, assuming you can climb the stairs. $3 mat rentals. On ClassPass. 256 Hanover St, 3rd floor Open daily, with weekday classes starting at 6:00/6:30 AM

see all reviewsI've never been into hot yoga. Whether it be in Buffalo, Brooklyn, or Boston— I kept trying because it was always so recommended on ClassPass, and it was a nightmare of a feat each and every time. That didn't happen with Barrie. They didn't just explain the postures, but go through the flows with us, expand on our breathwork, teach us how to isolate, what other modifications would work for our personalized form and body capacity, etc. I really felt like this class changed my outlook on hot yoga as a whole, and I'd love to recommend a class with Barrie as anyone's first time, or to those who are nervous/anxious/frustrated with their routine going into this. She also provided space, without judgement or restriction, for us to make it more challenging or modified depending on what you needed (which was good for a mixed level group). Note: it’s not the most challenging class, so if you’re looking to break out major sweat and hit 2nd stage muscle — it’s less effective in that sense but it was honestly just the workout I needed for a Sunday reset on a fatigued day.

My only complaint is that this class regularly shows up as 10-15 credits now which is a lot. It makes it really hard to go again. see all reviewsInstructor was awesome and super energetic. It was a great workout and I haven’t sweat like that in awhile! Only negative thing I have to say is, it was my first time and I figured someone would at least explain how the class works, show me the room we were in, etc. All they did was grab my name and tell me class was in studio 1 and pointed down the hall. I had to ask where to put my belongings, if spaces were assigned, where to grab the weights, and many more things that I feel should be introduced when it is someone’s first time and they are alone. I’ve been to many studios and I don’t expect a full tour of the place but at least some decency to make new comers feel comfortable.

She’s clear with her instructions, demos really well, is the perfect balance between galvanizing and encouraging, and is really nice and has a sense of humor! Also, just want to say that I really like Mat Pilates as a class - I know the current trend is for “flow” classes but I find my form is often poor in those classes as I race to keep up with increasingly fast flows. I would rather do a class like this where form is the focus, rather than speed of transition between poses. I get a great workout and feel like it’s more effective because I’m actually given the time to make sure I am doing the exercise correctly. Highly, highly recommend!
